- Range Walking Club
- Sunday 16th October
1994-Yorkshire-Hawes
-
- The walks on Sunday, 16 October centre on Hawes, a pretty
town with some pleasant cafes and shops. All walks offer
excellent views of the Yorkshire Dales. We leave school
at 8.00 a.m. prompt and have a toilet stop en route. With a
5.15 p.m. start to the return journey, we should be back in
Formby by 8.30 p.m. due to M6 road works. The cost of travel
is £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for children and students
in full-time education. Please return slip with cheque
(not cash) in an envelope marked "Range Walking Club" by
Thursday, 6 October 1994. Walking boots are essential
on all walks.
'A' Walk
Starting at Hawes we cross the River Ure and following
the Pennine Way make a gradual ascent up Great Shunner
Fell (848973) 2,350 ft. Skirting Fossdale Gill we descend
to the Hawes/Mucker road before climbing the steep slopes
of Lovely Seat. After going south to Pike Hill we follow
the limestone cliffs round to Sedbusk and then across the
fields back to Hawes.
-
- Distance: 14 miles
- Ascent: 3000'
- Leaders: Rick Tynan and Gordon Spence
'B'+ Walk
The walk is preceded by a visit to Hardraw Force, the
highest unbroken waterfall in England. A reduced entrance
charge of 30p has been negotiated by your leaders. The
walk itself is the same as the 'A' route to the top of
Great Shunner Fell. The last part of this ascent and the
descent to Butter Tubs Pass which follows are quite
difficult with no defined paths across boggy terrain.
Leaving Butter Tubs we head over the fells to Sedbusk and
from there return to Hawes. This is quite a demanding
walk which merits its 'B'+ classification.
Distance: 12 miles
- Ascent: 2,500'
- Leaders: Meirion Williams and Dave Miles
-
- 'B' Walk
- The walk starts at Bainbridge on the A684 and follows a
path South Westerly to Semer Water - the largest lake in
Yorkshire. We continue on to the hamlet of Marsett and
then after making an ascent of 800 ft towards Wether
Fell, we reach the highest point of the walk (1650 ft)
just North East of the summit. The route now descends
north west towards the village of Gayle before turning
south west along a road for about ½ mile before turning
off to cross Gayle Beck. We then continue along the river
back towards Gayle passing Aysgill Force on route and on
into Hawes. There are one or two short steep descents on
grass which may be slippery if wet.
- Distance: 9 miles
- Ascent: 1400'
- Leaders: Keith Ellard and Dave Griffiths
'C' Walk
A gentle and varied walk setting out from Hawes across
level fields to the village of Hardrow and visiting the
Falls (see 'B+' Walk) or lingering at the pub or tea
room. A steady climb of about 200 ft along the Pennine
Way takes us to the magnificent views visible from our
lunch-time halt. A descent through meadows brings us to
New Bridge and a pleasant country lane following Widdale
Beck. A bridle way and fields ends at the Wensleydale
Creamery for refreshments and/or cheese. Then a final
stroll through alleyways to Hawes.
- Distance: 6½ miles
- Ascent: 300'
- Leaders: David and Ginny Willis
