Range Walking Club

Sunday 12th March 1995-North Wales-Clwyd

 

On Sunday, 12 March, the walks take us to North Wales and the Clwydian mountain range. Given good weather, there are spectacular views all around. Conditions underfoot are surprisingly good but boots are essential as some of the walks have fairly steep ascents and descents on grassy slopes. All walks finish at Loggerheads Country Park where there are toilet facilities and a tea shop. There will be a toilet stop on the outward journey at Mold. The coaches will leave school at 0800 hours prompt and expect to be back there by 1900 hours.

'A' Walk
Starting on the B5429 Dre-Goch (G.R. 103682), ascending steadily northeast, we join the Offa's Dyke Path turning southeast and following the undulating backbone of the Ciwydian range. The highest point is Moel Famau (1820'). On attaining Foel Fenlli, the route gradually descends northeast across fields and through woods finally reaching Loggerheads Country Park, the finish of the walk.

'B'+ Walk
The walk starts on the A541 (G.R. 172684) ascending southwest to attain the summit of Moel Arthur (1500') which is the site of an ancient fort. From this point, the walk follows the same route as the 'A' walk to finish at Loggerheads Country Park.

'B' Walk
Starting at the village of Hendre, we follow a gently rising track southwest towards Moel-Llys-y-coed, eventually turning south along a road before again heading southwest on a rising track to meet the Offa's Dyke Path. We then follow the ridge path southwards over Moel Dywyll towards Moel Famau The path undulates and descends just before Moel Famau to give us a stiff climb of some 370' to the summit and the Jubilee Tower (1800'). Given good weather, the ridge walk gives superb views over the countryside to Snowdon on one side and Stanlow on the other. Leaving the summit we make two steep descents (600' and 300') to reach low level south of Ffrith Mountain. We then follow field paths and road to Loggerheads. Due to the steep descents and the possibility of mud and wet sections, walking boots are essential.

'C' Walk
A very attractive, undulating walk over field and track with a few moderate climbs which will be taken slowly. Muddy in parts so boots are essential. However, on a more positive note, the stiles are robust and sound! Starting approximately one mile west of Hendre on the A541, we proceed westerly for one mile before turning southeast towards the village of Cilcain where there should be time to visit, according to preference, the attractive old church or the pretty pub! Leaving Cilcain via the southwest we skirt lower eastern slopes of Moel Famau and Ffrith Mountain before crossing over the river Alyn and following the waterside path southerly into Loggerheads for a hot cuppa.
