Wednesday 29th December 1993-Lancashire-Pendle Area

 

This year's Christmas Walk is based in the Pendle area of Lancashire, mysteriously associated with witches and spells but peaceful and beautiful as well. The main walk is over Pendle Hill and takes place before lunch with a shorter stroll planned for the afternoon. In case of bad weather the afternoon route will be used in the morning. We meet in the car park at Barley in order to start walking at 1030 hrs prompt. The route goes East past the Ogden Reservoirs to turns North by Boar Clough. This short pull takes us to the edge of the fell with extensive views as we make for the trig point at Big End. Continuing North to the wall we then descend SW to Pendle House and then across fields to Barley.

Ascent: 850' taken slowly

We arrive at 1300 hrs at the Pendle Inn (a Theakstons' pub) for lunch

 

The afternoon walk leaves West to White Hough and then North across fields before turning back via

Black Reservoir. The views back to Pendle Hill help to frame the day beautifully.

Directions to Barley

Distance: 50 miles - allow 90 minutes, Most straightforward route is -

Formby => Southport, East through Preston on the A59, under the M6 at Samlesbury and then taking the A677 towards Blackburn. The A6119 Blackburn by-pass leads to the M65 which should be taken as far as Junction 7. Turn Left off the slip-road then Right on to the A678. At the Power Station veer left on the A6088 for about 4 miles when Newchurch-in-Pendle is signposted left Follow the maze of back lanes, through Newchurch (the home of the Pendle Witches legend and a Witches Shop!) and on to Barley. The car park is well signposted and is at the South end of the village by a fork in the roads.
