Range Walking Club
Sunday 27th June 1993-Lake District-Coniston
 
The walks on the 27 June are In the Coniston area of the Lake District always a popular area. As usual a good choice of walks is available for all to choose from. We Leave school as usual at 8.00 a.m. and expect to be back in Formby by 8.00 p.m. A short toilet stop will be made on the outward journey. Please return slip with cheque to Syb Miles, via the school office, by Thursday, 17 June.
 
'A' Walk
A delightful path takes us steadily from Little Arrow (290950') to Goats Water where we climb, short and steep, to the base of Dow Crag (2555'). An easy rake, or an optional scramble, lifts us to the summit. A high level promenade to Coniston Old Man (2633'), Brim Fell and Swirl How follows. We descend via the Prison Band to Swirl Hause and then rise to Wetherlam (2502'). The descent to Coniston is via Red Dell Beck.

'B'+ Walk
Starting from Coniston, the walk begins with a 4 mile long climb by way of Coppermines Valley, Levers Water and Swirl Hause to the summit of Wetherlam (2502') and spectacular Lakeland views in all directions. With all the hard work done for the day we then descend via Wetherlam Edge and Greenburn Beck to Little Langdale Tarn. The return to Coniston through High Tilberthwaite and Yewdale offers a complete contrast in scenery (and physical effort!) using woodland paths and finally the Cumbria Way.

'B' Walk
A circular walk from Coniston, of hillside and valley. It starts with a strenuous steep climb at slow pace by lane and path on to the hillside below The Old Man and continues across moor and becks before descending into Torver. The second half starts across Torver Common to Coniston Water for a relaxed walk back by the lake in scenic surroundings where there will be opportunity to look for the rare Red Necked Grebe recently reported In these parts.

'C' Walk
Given good weather there are splendid views throughout the day as we walk from just north of Blawith (on the A5084) to Coniston via Beacon Tarn, Torver and sections of the Cumbria Way. The walk includes open fells, a tarn and a disused reservoir, a Lakeland village with 2 inns, a woodland descent to a shoreside walk into Coniston passing John Ruskin's former home and Coniston Old Hall. Boots are essential as there are several unavoidable wet and muddy sections.
