Range Walking Club
Sunday 24th January 1993-Howgills-Sedbergh

Happy New Year to all members. The walks this month are on January 24th and are based on Sedbergh. The 'A' walk once again takes us into the Howgills but the remaining walks take us into slightly different territory. The coach will leave school at 8.00 a.m. prompt and we expect to be back by 7.30 p.m. The cost remains at £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for children and students (under 18 yrs.). There will be a short toilet stop at Tebay Services on the outward journey (10 mins.) Please complete and return slip with cheque to Barbara Craine, school office, by Thursday 14th January. In future, on the return slip, we would like a contact telephone number given so that we can complete our records for each walk.

'A' Walk
A high level traverse of the Howgill Fells from Rawthey to the Lune. From the Cross Keys Hotel we ascend very steeply close to the impressive Cautley Spout falls to reach the Calf (676 metres). After following the ridge to Fell Head we descend to Whins End, Brown Moor and Castley, finishing on a quiet road close to Sedbergh. Winter clothing is essential and an ice axe would be helpful if conditions are bad.

Distance: 12 miles
Ascent: 600 metres
Leaders: G Spence and R Tynan
'B'+ Walk
This starts at Rawthey Bridge and follows the route of the River Rawthey to its source and continues to the top of Baugh Fell (pronounced Bow). This is a charming walk with beautiful views of the Rawthey, Uldale Force and the Howgills. The first half of the walk is all uphill (5 miles) and could be very boggy in parts. Once we get to Knoutberry Haw, however, the journey back to Sedbergh is all downhill with views on either side.

Distance: 10 miles
Ascent: 1400 ft.
Leaders: Meirion Williams and Keith Ellard

'B' Walk
A circular walk through the varied scenery of country tracks, fields, open fell and a riverside walk. Starting at Sedbergh, our route takes us south to the village of Millthrop, where we walk eastwards over fields and lanes to Side Farm. We cross Frostrow Fells and descend via fields and lanes to cross the River Dee at Barth Bridge. Turning westwards, our route is along the Dales Way to Rash Bridge where we again cross the Dee. After a steep ascent of Moser Hill (180 ft.) we descend to Millthrop and retrace our steps to the coach at Sedbergh. Some of the stiles are somewhat neglected and boots are essential.

Distance: 8½ miles
Ascent: 750 ft. (180 ft. at Moser Hill)
Leaders: David Griffiths and David Miles

'C' Walk
This walk follows the River Dee from Sedbergh to Dent and back. The outward path goes for much of the way along the river bank and we return via the Dales Way. A pleasant walk in lovely surroundings with views on either side.

Distance: 7½ miles
Leaders: Robert and Joyce Blackwell
