Sunday 24th November 1991-Shropshire-Oswestry

 

Our next walk on Sunday 24 November takes us to a new area for the club Oswestry. The walks are concentrated to the west of Oswestry in Offa's Dyke territory and there are four walks to choose from. We leave school as usual promptly at 8.00 a.m. and expect to be back by 7.00 p.m. The cost of the coach is £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. There will be a short toilet stop at Ruabon on the outward journey. Please return slip with cheque (not cash if possible) to Barbara Craine, school office, by Thursday 14th November 1991.

'A' Walk
Starting at Llanymynech on the A483 south of Oswestry, the walk heads north along Offa's Dyke path, reaching a summit at Moelydd where there are excellent views in all directions. At Trefonen Hall, we leave Offa's Dyke path and head northwest to Llyn Rhwddwyn and Craigrihw. Offa's Dyke path is rejoined at G.R. 256310 and followed south until returning through park land to Oswestry.

'B'+ Walk
We start where Offa's Dyke crosses the A5 and climb up to Tyn y Groes, see Chirk Castle to east. Descend to Chirk Castle Mill and cross River Ceiriog before steep climb up and along the Dyke with extensive views (On a clear day) of Cheshire/Shropshire plains. Follow Dyke to Craignant and Carreg-y-Big. From here follow road to Oswestry old racecourse then return to Dyke along racecourse gallop into woodland and descend to River Morda. Leave Dyke and walk through parkland to join road to Oswestry past waterworks.

'B' Walk
From the village of Chirk we walk west along the bank of the River Ceiriog under the famous parallel aqueduct and viaduct. We join the southbound Offa's Dyke path just south of Castle Mill at 260370.The ramparts of Chirk Castle dominate the Ceriog Valley in this area. Often walking on the Dyke itself and always through pleasant and varied countryside, the route follows part of the 'B'+ walk. After approx. 3½ miles following the Dyke we leave it at Carreg-y-Big to complete the walk through woodland and parkland prior to the finish at Oswestry.

'C' Walk
This is a walk offering great scenic variety. The starting point is Selattyn (approx. 3½ miles from Oswestry on the 84579).We join Offa's Dyke long distance footpath and continue in a southerly direction past the Old Racecourse from where there are distant views of Snowdonia to the west and the Long Mynd to the south. At the Llanforda Mill (PH) we turn eastward walking through meadows to Oswestry.
