Range Walking Club
Sunday 15th March 1992-North Wales-Berwyns

The beautiful but desolate Berwyn Mountains of North Wales are the venue of our March 15th club walk. The highest elevation of over 2700' make for tremendous views, weather permitting. As it is still early in the year boots, warm clothing and waterproofs must be considered essential. We leave school at 8.00 a.m. prompt, returning by 7.30 p.m. approximately. The cost continues to be £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for under 18's or students in full time education (up to 21 years old). Please return slip with cheque (not cash) to Barbara Craine, school office, by Thursday 5th March.

'A' Walk
We start at Cynwyd and ascend to the summit of Moel yr Henfaes (1893'). Turning South we follow with the climb to the top of Cadair Bronwen (2572'). It actually has a nameplate on the cairn. Continuing along the ridge we enjoy extensive views of the Welsh mountains including Snowdonia. After visiting Cadair Berwyn (2684') we top out the Berwyns by climbing Moel Sych (2713'). Taking an easterly route a descent brings us to the highest waterfall outside the highlands of Scotland i.e. Pistyll Rhaeadr, with a drop of 240'. To finish the day we then follow the valley S.E. to Llanrhaeadr Yn Mochant. Please note this undulating walk is above the normal 'A' walk for difficulty and should only be attempted by those with first class clothing and footwear. Weather exposure will be taken into consideration before setting off.

Distance: 14 miles
Ascent: 3000'
Leaders: John Hughes and Arthur Jones

'B+' Walk
Starts at Llandrillo (035371) in the Dee Valley and climbs the shoulder S.E. to the start of the main Berwyn Ridge, Cadair Bronwen 784m. From here a delightful walk South taking in Cadair Berwyn 827m, and Moel Sych 827m, takes us to Pistyll Raeadr waterfall, the highest in Wales, (240' drop). then a pleasant walk S.E. along the valley takes us to our finish at Llanrhaeadr Yn Mochnant 124261.

Distance: 11½ miles
Ascent 2200'
Leaders: Dave Luty and Ian Mitchell

'B' Walk
This begins on the B4931 at G.R. 017305 about 3 miles N.W. of Llangynog. The first 3½ miles follows a generally easterly direction, climbing steadily some 1200' along an ill-defined and rather boggy track across open moorland. Boots are essential. This section is a hard slog and should not be underestimated, but it will be taken at a very leisurely pace, and the effort involved will be amply rewarded by great views of all the mountains of North Wales, and, from the summit of Moel Sych (2713') right across the Shropshire plains. An easy descent beside the corrie, and a grassy path down a beautiful valley, leads to the spectacular Pistyll Rheaedr Falls G.R. 075295 (240' highest in Britain outside the Highlands). There is a good cafe there and we shall allow plenty of time for refreshments. The remaining three miles or so down the valley will be an easy walk along footpaths, tracks, and minor roads to Llanrhaeadr Yn Mochnant.

Distance: 9 miles
Ascent: 1400'
Leaders: Phil Morgan and Patrick Ferguson

'C' Walk
A pleasant circular walk starting at the village of Cynwyd which follows a ridge of hills to Llyn Mynyllod, descending through woods to Tyfos and returns back along the valley. Apart from a little wet ground in the middle, the walking is on quiet tarmac lanes and firm bridle paths. Blessed with fair weather we should have excellent views of the Berwyn Mountains and the flood plain of the Dee.

Distance: 7 miles
Ascent: 600'
Leaders: Bob Hutt and Dave Griffiths

Will members please note that as these walks are in a remote but beautiful part of North Wales, such luxuries as cafes open on Sundays, let alone any other day, are few and far between. Please therefore, bring extra drinks with you, as no refreshments are available at coach pick-up points or on return journey to Formby.
