Range Walking Club

Sunday 10th February 1991-Lancashire-Ribble Valley

 

The trip this month takes place on Sunday, 10th February 1991 and incorporates our traditional annual Hot-pot supper at the end of the day. Our walks are centred in the Ribble Valley area and all end at the Ribchester Arms, Ribchester, where supper has been arranged. There are toilet facilities at the start and end of all walks. We leave school as usual at 8.00 a.m. prompt and expect to be back by 8.00 p.m. Cost of the coach continues to be £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. The meal will cost £3.75 per person exclusive of drinks. Tea and coffee is available if required. Will members please indicate below which walk they are likely to Join and also choice of main meal, and enclose the appropriate charges. Please pay by cheque if at all possible. It would be appreciated if choice of meal is strictly adhered to on the day as the set numbers will have been pre-ordered, so please remember what you requested. It must be emphasized that it will be extremely muddy underfoot on some sections of all the walks unless we have a hard frost. Boots are therefore essential on all walks. Warm windproof clothing is also essential at this time of the year.

'A' Walk
This month's 'A' walk follows the picturesque valley of the River Hodder from Newton to the base of Longridge Fell. The only climb of the day takes us to the summit, and paths and field tracks return us to Ribchester in time for supper. The walk starts at Newton (691494) and follows the South bank of the river via Knowlemere Manor to Barholme Bridge. A short section of road follows to Whitewell whence we take to the higher paths before crossing the road and reach Doeford Bridge via Ings Wood. We then follow tracks to Weedacre where the ascent of Longridge Fell begins. From the fell top, the route proceeds to Lennox Farm and then Southwards to Dutton Manor and Stydd.

Ascent: 1000' max.

'B'+ Walk
Starting at Brungerley Bridge, Clitheroe (on the B6478 Waddington Road) we follow the route of the Ribble Way in reverse via Edisford Bridge, Great Mitton and Hurst Green and finish at the Ribchester Arms, Ribchester.

'B' Walk
A circular walk from Ribchester via Hurst Green. The route is varied along woodland and field paths. The walk covers a number of places of historical and architectural interest including the grounds of Stoneyhurst College.

'C' Walk
Starting at Hurst Green we walk Southeast then East following the bank of the Ribble until the Hodder joins it. We walk through the grounds of Stoneyhurt College and via varying countryside to finish at the Ribchester Arms. The route takes us close to five buildings of historic interest constructed during the 16th and 17th centuries.
