Wales-Ogwen Valley
-
- Our next walk is on Sunday, 15th October 1989, in the
Ogwen Valley area of the Snowdonia National Park. The
area contains some most spectacular mountains which,
whether viewed from the valley floor or the summits
themselves, cannot fail to impress. The coach will leave
school promptly at 8.00 a.m. and should return by 8.00
p.m. The cost of the coach is £3.00 for adults and
£2.00 for children. There will be a toilet stop on the
outward journey and toilet facilities available at the
end of the day at Ogwen, where all walks finish. Please
indicate which walk you are likely to join and return
slip with remittance to Barbara Craine at the school
office by Thursday, 5th October 1989. Boots and warm
waterproof clothing are considered essential as all walks
cross exposed ground.
'A' Walk
This walk traverses four of the fifteen Welsh peaks which
are over 3000 ft. Starting from Ogwen Lake we ascend
Tryfan (3010 ft.) via the north ridge, a route which
involves some scrambling to reach the summit. After a
quick greeting to those passing acquaintances of mountain
walkers who venture this way, Adam and Eve, we descend
via the south ridge to the Col Bwlch Tryfan. From here we
ascend to the summit of Glyder fach (3262 ft.) passing
the famous Cantilever rock on our way. From Glyder fach
we proceed west across the lunar like landscape, past the
castle of the winds, and onto Glyder fawr (3279 ft.). We
then descend to the col above the Devil's Kitchen before
making our final descent of the southern slopes of Y Garn
(3104 ft.). We descend the north-eastern ridge of Y Garn
past Llyn Idwal to finish our walk at Ogwen Cottage.
Distance: 8 miles
- Ascent: 3950'.
- Leaders: Ian Mitchell and Tom Dillion
'B'+ Walk
This walk takes us to one of the finest summits in Wales,
Elidir Fawr, a peak which is often neglected by fell
walkers. Our walk starts in the Nant Ffrancon Pass where
the Youth Hostel road meets the A5 (GR633643). After a
short road walk we climb steadily up the north-eastern
slopes of Carnedd y Filiast to the summit (2695 ft.).
From here we sweep westwards over Mynydd Perfedd (2665
ft.) and onto Elidir Fawr (3030 ft.), the summit of which
offers extensive views of the other peaks in Snowdonia.
The route then takes us east and then south to Y Garn
(3104 ft.), the highest point of the day. We descend from
Y Gain via the north-east ridge past Llyn Idwal to finish
at Ogwen Cottage.
Distance: 7 miles
- Ascent: 3200'
Leaders: Arthur Jones and John Hughes
'B' Walk
Starts from the Gwern Isaf farmhouse (G.R. 685601) and
follows the gentle ridge between the Nant Gwern y Gof and
Nant Yr Ogof south-westwards. Upon reaching the main
ridge of the Glyders mountain range we turn westwards
until the summit of Glyder Fach (3261 ft.) is reached.
Time for photographs by the Cantilever rock and then we
continue our walk westwards past the castle of the winds,
to descend via the Gribin ridge to Ogwen.
Distance: 5 miles
- Ascent: 2300'
Leaders: Kate Croft and Phil Morgan
'C' Walk
A pleasant walk which offers excellent views of the
mountains on each side of the Ogwen valley. Starting from
Capel Curig we proceed along the A5 westwards for a short
while before turning north to attain the col between
Craig Wen and Pen Llithrig y Wrack, the only ascent of
the day. Our route then meanders westwards crossing the
A5 twice before we reach Llyn Ogwen. A circuit of Ogwen
Lake brings us to the finish of our walk at Ogwen
Cottage. Refreshments and toilet facilities are available
at Ogwen Cottage.
Distance: 7 miles
- Ascent: 670'
Leader: David Guiver
