Sunday 11th March 1990-Lake District-Hawkshead

 

Sunday, March 11th, sees us in a most attractive part of the southern Lake District between Ambleside and Grizedale Forest, on the west side of Windermere Lake. The coach will leave school promptly at 8.00 a.m. and we should be back in Formby by 7.30 p.m. There will be a brief toilet stop at M6. Burton Services on the outward journey. All walks finish at Hawkshead, where there are refreshments and toilet facilities. The cost of the coach is £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Please indicate on the slip below which walk you are likely to join and return it with payment to Barbara Craine, School Office, by Thursday, 1st March. Boots are essential for all walks as conditions underfoot will be wet and often muddy.

'A' walk
Starting from Waterhead (377032) near Ambleside, we walk via lanes to Miller Bridge (372046). From here we make the summit of Loughrigg Fell (1101') (347052) before descending via Red Bank to Elterwater. We then make for Little Langdale via Sawreys Wood, and on to High Tilberthwaite (305011) from where we climb to the summit of Holme Fell (1040'). Our return to Hawkshead is via Yew Tree Tarn and Tarn Hows.

'B'+ walk
Starting with a ferry crossing from Bowness we walk southwest via Town End, Bishop Woods, Eeel House (368940), High Dale Park, and Breasty Haw. Turning NNW we make for the Grizedale Forest Visitor Centre. A walk over Hawkshead Moor brings us to our destination at Hawkshead.

'B' walk
Crossing Lake Windermere by ferry from Bowness we walk northwards for approximately 3½ miles along the side of the lake as far as High Wray Bay, (376004). Here we turn southwest and then west as we make for Outgate, passing to the south of Blelham Tarn. At this point, depending upon weather conditions, we can either walk into Hawkshead or continue westwards for a glimpse of Tarn Hows before turning southeast along a choice of paths into Hawkshead.

'C' walk
We start from the car park at Hawkshead where toilet facilities are available. A gentle climb to the summit of Leatherbarrow is rewarded by magnificent views of southern Lakeland. From here we walk along forest trails and open countryside to Near Sawrey of Beatrix Potter fame. We return to Hawkshead by minor road along the side of Esthwaite Water.
