Range Walking Club

Sunday 17th June 1990-Lake District-Langdales

 

Once again we offer you four walks to choose from on our next outing which is to the Great Langdale area of the Lake District, superb walking country for all, no wonder we return there with such variety to choose from! It takes place on Sunday, 17th June and the coach will leave school at 8.00 a.m. returning by 8.00 p.m. This will enable us to take full advantage of the longer days afforded by June. There will be a short toilet stop at Burton Services on the outward journey. The cost is still a bargain at £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Where else can you have a day out in such beautiful surroundings for such a small price. Please indicate which walk you are likely to join and return the slip to Barbara Craine, School office, by Thursday 7th June.

'A' Walk
Starts at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and proceeds up the valley of Mickleden, prior to climbing Rossett Ghyll (2000') to Angle Tarn. We then continue via Esk Hause (the true one!!) and ascend Esk Pike (2903'). If conditions permit, excellent views from Hanging Knotts will be seen during the ascent of Bowfell (2960'). The return journey is via Cringle Crags (2816') and descent via Red Tarn and Browney Ghyll.

'B'+ Walk
A chance for good 'B' walkers to enjoy centre Lakeland. From New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel we walk westwards along the Cumbria Way, following the Langdale Valley. There is then a steepish climb to Rossett Ghyll and thence to Angie Tarn. From here we turn Northeast along the ridge to Stake Pass. We then climb again onto High Raise (2500'). The return, again steepish in places, is via Sergeant Man (2414'), Stickle Tarn and Stickle Ghyll back to our starting point.

'B' Walk
Starting at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel this is a lowland walk around the foot of Lingmoor Fell, the ridge which divides the two Langdales, passing Blea Tarn described by Wordsworth as "a liquid pool that glittered in the sun", Little Langdale Tarn and Elterwater before returning to the New Dungeon Ghyll via the Cumbria Way. The walk offers the opportunity for liquid refreshment en route.

'C' Walk
We start at Skelwith Bridge and saunter along the Cumbria Way to Elterwater. From here, a short walk along the lane takes us to Fletchers Wood and then onto Colwith Force (waterfall). We then walk westwards to Little Langdale and the possibility of refreshment at the Inn. We walk North through Sawreys Wood, back towards Elterwater. On the day we then have the option of walking onto the New Hotel either via the Cumbria Way, or on the flat path in the Great Langdale Beck plain.
