Range Walking Club

Sunday 16th October 1988-Lake District-Glenridding

 

Our walks for October are on Sunday the 16th and are based upon the Ullswater area of the Lake District. Always a beautiful area, the colours of Autumn will enhance all the scheduled walks. Camera enthusiasts please note. The coach will leave school at 8.00 a.m. promptly and we should be back there by 7.30 p.m. The cost of the coach has been kept at £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. A toilet stop on the M6 will be made on the outward journey. Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you are likely to join and return it to Barbara Craine at school by Thursday, 6th October 1988.

A note on clothing is relevant following the September walk in extremely wet weather-particularly trousers. Cotton based materials and denim (jeans) are useless for wet conditions and can be a cause of discomfort and extreme cold in autumn and obviously in winter. Substantial water absorbent material should be sought when purchasing trousers e.g. wool or tweed are best. Other modern, heavy man-made fibre stretch fabrics are also available when used specifically for walking breeches.

'A' Walk
Starts at Troutbeck church and makes the gradual ascent of the Garburn Pass on to the Ill Bell Ridge, taking in Yoke (2309'), Ill Bell (2476') and Froswick (2359'). The ridge affords superb views of Troutbeck and Kentmere valleys. The walk continues to Thornthwaite Crag (2569') before traversing High Street (2718'), with views of Hayeswater, Haweswater and Riggindale, as far as The Knott (2423'). We then descend via Satura Crags, Angle Tarn to Glenridding.

'B'+ Walk
Begins at Horseman's Bridge near Brotherswater and walk Northwards prior to climbing steadily to Angle Tarn Pikes (1836') via Boredale Hause and Stony Rigg. The route then follows the ridge over Beda Fell until descending into Boredale at Garth Heads. Walking round the base of Sleet Fell we then take the gradual climb to Place Fell summit (2135'). We then return to Glenridding through Patterdale. Given good weather the views are magnificent, both of the surrounding mountains and of course Lake Ullswater.

'B' Walk
Starting near Hartsop village we proceed Eastwards and upwards along Hayeswater Ghyll. This ascent provides breathtaking views all around, given good weather, which continue until we reach the summit of Knott (2423'). We then follow the ridge above Hayeswater to Thornthwaite Crag (2569'). A fairly steep descent brings us to Pasture Beck and then back to Hartsop. We then follow Goldrill Beck to Patterdale and thence to Glenridding.

'C' Walk
We leave the coach at Dobbin Wood on the A592 on Ullswater's Western shore, and walk Southwest to our coffee rendezvous at a cafe near Glencoyne Wood. After refreshments we ascend slowly up through woods to Aira Force, a beautiful waterfall. Continuing Northwest we arrive at Dockray village where lunch at the local hostelry (if required) can be taken-snacks are reasonably priced. Following lunch we head back towards Ullswater across meadows until we reach the lakeside and then take the path back to Glenridding. There are other route alternatives if the party so wish.
