Range Walking Club

Sunday 22nd November 1987-Yorkshire Dales-Wharfedale

 

For this month's walk we take you to a most beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park-Wharfedale. Although the three walks offered are kept to lower heights because of potential winter weather, the views all day are superb and the villages of the dales enhance the pastoral scenes all around. We leave school on Sunday, 22nd November at 8.00 a.m. prompt, and hope to be back there by 7.00 p.m. The cost of the walk is £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Toilet stops will be available prior to commencement of all walks and will be present where all walks finish in the village of Burnsall. Boots are necessary for all walks as the underfoot conditions are, in winter, likely to be wet in parts. Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you are likely to join and return it to Barbara Craine at school by Thursday, 19th November 1987.

'A' Walk
Starts at the golf course on the Skipton Bypass and progresses through fields and lanes until the fell footpath to Sharp How (1160') is used to ascend its summit. After dropping down to Flasby, the path then winds through undulating countryside to Rylstone and thence to Cracoe where a break may be possible supplemented by the local hostelry if required. We then continue to the award winning village of Linton and cross the Falls to follow the Dalesway south via the River Wharfe to Burnsall.

'B' Walk
Starts at Bolton Abbey (Ref. S E 071539-Outdoor Leisure map 1:25000 No. 10) and crosses the River Wharfe at the sign of the old Priory. We walk along the river bank, part of the Dalesway, before passing through the Valley of Desolation (a name which could be hardly less appropriate) to cross Barden Fell to the highest point, Simon's Seat (1592') After a rather twisting descent, we pass the hamlet of High Skyreholm and through Trollers Gill, home of the legendary "Banquest", a spectral hound with eyes as big as saucers, taking a bridle way to return us to the river again at Burnsall.

'C' Walk
Without doubt a most beautiful circular walk starting and finishing at Burnsall. En route we visit typical Dales villages of Hebden and Grassington before hopefully stopping for lunch at the delightful village of Linton. Pub food is available at the local hostelry for those wanting a prepared meal, but the village green adjacent offers a beautiful base for those with sandwiches and flasks. After our repast we continue via Thorpe and typical Dales pastures back to Burnsall.
