Range Walking Club

Sunday 21st September 1986-North Lake District-Pooley Bridge

 

The next outing for the walking club is on Sunday, 21st September, and will be to the Ullswater/Pooley Bridge area of the Lake District. This area is surprisingly quiet with such easy access from the M6. The coach will leave school at 8.00 a.m. and will travel direct to Pooley Bridge, the start for all walks. There are toilet facilities close to the parking place. We should be back at the school for 7.00 p.m. The cost of the walks is £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Details of the walks are given below. Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you are likely to join and return it to Barbara Craine in the school office by Thursday, 11th September.

'A' Walk
From Pooley Bridge the route will be similar to that of the 'B' party, we will briefly join High Street (Roman Road) before following a path to the east of Arthurs Pike, proceeding to Loadpot Hill, Wether Hill, down into the Martindale Valley to Howtown, and back to Pooley Bridge along the path rounding Barton Park woodlands. This walk offers the same delightful views as the 'B' walk plus views to the east of the Yorkshire hills, and of course, the delights of Martindale Valley. Boots are essential and we suggest that this is not the outing for 'B' walkers to move to the 'A' party.

'B' Walk
From Pooley Bridge the route will be to Arthur's Pike, bypassing the Barton Park woodlands, proceed along High Street (Roman Road) towards Loadpot Hill, drop down to Howtown, and return to Pooley Bridge by a path which at times comes close to the shores of Ullswater. The views of the Lake District mountains from this section of the High Street path are as good as any in Lakeland, and the waters of Ullswater are seen frequently. Boots are essential.

'C' Walk
From Pooley Bridge, the route will be towards Askham Fell, taking the path from Barton Park woodlands descending north to Winder Hall farm, and then turning west down to Cracoe and into Pooley Bridge. Heughscar Hill is described by Wainwright as the gentlest of eminences. The walk is a happy stroll from Pooley Bridge, although there is some climbing which reveals a lovely view of Ullswater with the Helvellyn range forming a majestic background. The route off the hill can be boggy and boots are recommended.
