Range Walking Club

Sunday 22nd March 1987-Wales-Llangollen

 

The March walk takes place on Sunday, 22nd and is in the Llangollen area of Wales. All the walks maximise the views and beauty of the valley through which flows the River Dee as well as the Shropshire Union Canal. The coach will leave school at 8.00 am. and we should be back at school by 7.30 pm. at the latest. Cost of the walks has been maintained for the time being at £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children following discussion at the recent A.G.M. Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you are likely to join and return it to Barbara Craine in the school office by Thursday 12th March. At the A.G.M. a voluntary service to distribute monthly walk information to members whose children have left, or will be leaving school this summer, was introduced. Any member wishing to take advantage of this service is requested to contact Ian Gilmour or Dave Luty for further details.

'A' Walk
The walk starts with a steepish climb out of Llangollen (it will be taken at a leisurely pace). which is rewarded with superb views over the town and vale of Llangollen. We then head. west, crossing Vivod mountain and skirting the northern edge of Ceiriog Forest. Keeping a westerly direction we cross Moel Fferna (ref. 116398) at 630 metres the highest point of the walk, following on to Bwlch y Gaseg (ref. 099401) and eventually turn northwards, dropping down through the forest to Corwen. Although we do not climb to any great height the walk is testing as parts of the route involve trekking through heather over roughish moorland. Good boots are essential as some boggy ground may be encountered if rain precedes the walk day.

'B' Walk
The walk begins in the centre of Llangollen from where we move towards Castel Dinas Bran (which can be visited by those wishing to stretch their climbing legs) We then follow an escarpment overlooking Llangollen Valley. Having gained height the walk then goes over heathered moorland to World's End (not literally). The return journey is via Eglwyseg Glen to Valle Crucis Abbey, where the coach will be available for those not wishing to do an extension of 1.5 miles via the canal tow path back to Llangollen. Excellent views abound throughout the day. Boots are essential and trousers recommended for walking in heather.

'C' Walk
We start off with a leisurely stroll along the Shropshire Union Canal towpath then via farmland we proceed to Valle Crucis Abbey. From this point we proceed towards Castell. Dinas Bran and via the easy approach we climb slowly to the summit of the ruined castle. We then return to Llangollen via a choice of routes to be made depending on preference of party members. It is essential that boots are worn as some of this popular walk will be heavy if rain has been excessive prior to the day.
