Range Walking Club
Sunday 14th June 1987-North Yorkshire -Horton in Ribblesdale

The June walk takes place on Sunday 14th and is in North Yorkshire. All walks can be followed on the 1:25000 O.S. Outdoor Leisure No. 2 Map - Yorkshire Dales (Western Area). It is centred on Ingleton which is a popular walking area famous for the Three Peaks of Whernside, Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough. The coach leaves school at 8.00 am. and we should be back there by 7.30 pm. at the latest. Cost of the walks has been maintained at £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you are likely to join and return it to Barbara Craine in the school office by Thursday 4th June. It is strongly advised that all walkers wear boots. Many paths are eroded and wet weather prior to the day will considerably effect underfoot conditions. Toilet facilities are available at starting points and 'B' and 'C' walks have cafe facilities at the finish at Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

'A' Walk
Starts at Ingleton and after a short walk in starts the ascent of the Southwest ridge of Whernside, Yorkshire's highest peak. The peak at 2419' is reached after a 7 mile steady ascent. On a clear day (How many times have you heard that before!) there are extensive views of the dales and surrounding peaks of Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent. The descent reveals views of the Settle-Carlisle railway with the beautiful and impressive architecture of Ribblehead viaduct coming as quite a surprise after miles of open moorland etc. and we continue via Force Gill to Ribblehead.

Distance: 12½ miles
Ascent: 2000'
Leaders: Ken Bryning and Peter Kenna

'B' Walk
Commences at Ingleton and ascends Ingleborough (2373') via Crina Bottom and the southern slopes. After a very short steepish section early on the climb is very gentle indeed until the last mile where some slightly extra effort will be needed to attain the actual summit. This latter part will be taken at a gentle pace after which a longish lunch will maximize the time for taking in the extensive views of the Dales which Ingleborough provides. We then descend eastwards to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The last three miles are delightful through limestone outcrops.

Distance: 9½ miles
Ascent: 1700' (over 3½ miles)
Leaders: Dave Purdy and Dave Luty

'C' Walk
Commences at the pretty village of Clapham (with time for coffee if required). The walk follows the line of the Nature frail before crossing Clapham Beck. Turning South and then west we proceed along Thwaite Lane before ascending gently to Moughton Scars (1200') providing views of Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough. The route then descends across fields into Horton-in-Ribblesdale where there are facilities for refreshments at the cafe.

Distance: 6½ miles
Leaders: Derek Watchorn and Chris Symes
