Sunday 22nd February 1987-Trough of Bowland

 

The Annual Supper Walk is on Sunday, 22nd. February. in the Forest of Bowland/Dunsop Bridge area. Following the excellent hospitality at Newton in Bowland last year we have booked the same venue again, The Parkers Arms Hotel. We hope for the usual excellent support of all members and their families. We have been offered three alternative meals and need to place our orders in advance. Please indicate your choice on the attached. form and. return it by Thursday, 29th January at the very latest. The cost of the coach will be £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. The meal will cost £3.00 per person exclusive of drinks. Boots are required for all walks. It will be muddy unless we have a hard frost. Warm windproof clothing is also essential at this time of the year. Toilet facilities are available at starting and. finishing points

'A' walk may be followed on S.D. 65/75-1: 25000
'B' & 'C' walks may be followed on S.D. 64/74-1: 25000

'A' Walk
Starting from Dunsop Bridge we follow the River Dunsop northwards through the Forest of Bowland to Whitendale - the heart of Bowland Fell country. From here we follow the Whitendale river, over Whitendale Fell to join the Old Roman Road. to the south of Shooters Clough. Turning southeast we cross Croasdale Fell to House of Croasdale and make our way to Newton via open farmland. The walk is over undulating fells with no major climbs and will be taken at a steady pace to encourage strong 'B' walkers to try an 'A' walk. It may be shortened if conditions prove to be severe.

'B' Walk
Starts at the hamlet of Whitewell walking generally southwards crossing the river Hodder at Doeford Bridge, where we turn westwards skirting just to the northeast of Chipping before walking north to finish at Dunsop Bridge. The walk takes in a pleasant mixture of farmland, with its inevitable stiles, woodland and a little open moorland.. It is through undulating countryside, and is longer than most 'B' walks. In view of the distance we hope to maintain a good steady pace.

'C' Walk
Starts at the village of Chipping and takes the the same route as the final part of the 'B' walk via Chipping Lawn, Lickhurst Farm, Dinckling Green Farm, through Whitemore Plantation to finish at Dunsop Bridge.
