Sunday 22nd September 1985-North Wales-Beddgelert

 

Hoping you are now all fit and raring to go we would remind you that the next walk takes place on Sunday, 22nd September 1985. Recognising that we have had a lengthy spell of inactivity we have opted for a relatively easy introduction. Snowdon will be the area of the next walk but only the 'A' party will put that particular mountain to the test. Meanwhile 'B' and 'C' parties are catered for by much less ambitious targets but in an area of the National Park not previously explored - around Beddgelert. The coach will leave school promptly at 8.00 a.m. and we expect to return by 7.30 p.m. There will be toilet facilities prior to the start of all walks. The cost of the walks continues to be £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children and providing we fill the coaches on the next 6 trips we do not visualise any increase in these costs prior to next March. Please indicate below (on the return slip) which walk you are likely to join although the choice is not binding.

'A' Walk
This walk involves the ascent of Snowdon from the more unusual west side. Starting at the Snowdon Ranger Centre we ascend via the path similarly named climbing steadily and less steeply than many other recognised routes. The ultimate goal is in view most of the way together with panoramic views all around. There is the additional incentive of a drink at the summit hostelry. The descent will be via Watkin Path to the picking up point at Nantgwynant.

Ascent: 2800 ft.

'B' Walk
As promised above, a less arduous walk than usual by way of the lower reaches of the Watkin Path route to Snowdon. Prior to meeting the steep sections we turn almost due west to the summit of Yr Aran (2300'). By turning W.S.W. we follow the ridge to Craig Wen, A walk providing extensive views across the Lleyn Peninsula and Mid Wales. The path maintains this general direction and descends to Beddgelert, a small town nestling in the fold of surrounding mountains.

Ascent: 1600 ft

'C' Walk
This is a low level walk in the unspoilt countryside around Beddgelert. We have avoided any sharp ascents/descents but still maintained many panoramic views. the town itself has an unusual source for its name and a browse around will reveal its source and history.
