- Range Walking Club
- Sunday 11th May 1986-North Lake
District-Keswick Area
-
- The next Walking Club outing will be on Sunday 11 May
1986 and is centred on some of the most spectacular and
beautiful scenery the Lake District has to offer.
Derwentwater is known as the Queen of the Lakes and the
west side gives opportunities for both high and low level
walks of real merit. Coach(es) depart from school at 8.00
am and we hope to return by 8.00 pm. A convenience stop
will be made at Tebay Service Centre on the outward
journey. Boots are strongly recommended for all walks but
especially necessary for 'A' and 'B' excursions. The cost
of the walks is still only £3.00 for adults and £2.00
for children and if we are supported we hope to maintain
the costs at least until September. Please indicate on
the return slip which walk you intend to join and return
to Barbara Craine, if possible by Thursday 1 May 1986.
Early booking is advisable for what will be a memorable
day, whichever walk is chosen.
'A' Walk
One of Wainwright's classic Lakeland walks which
starts at Braithwaite and climbs Barrow (1494') from
whence we move onto Sail (2530') and then follow an airy
ridge walk to Eel Crags (2749'). A return excursion can
be made out to Grasmoor (views of Buttermere/Crummock
Water) with a height of (2791'). Then follows a short
ascent to Hopegill Head (2525') and then another climb to
Grisedale Pike (2593') followed by return to Braithwaite.
A strenuous day's walk rewarded with splendid views of
crags allied to ridge walks par excellence.
Distances: 11½ miles (Inc. Excursion)
- Ascent: 4500' (Inc. Excursion)
Leaders: C Symes and A Frost
'B' Walk
Catbells (1481') is regarded as one of Lakeland's great
favourites, which grandmothers and company can
climb". To make this trip much more appealing we
have designed a walk starting in beautiful Borrowdale
Valley at Grange and getting our strenuous efforts out of
the way early by ascending to High Spy (2143'). This
climb will be taken at a leisurely pace and ample time
will be allowed for all participants. From the summit
there follows a descent to Maiden Moor (1887') followed
by a simple stroll to Catbells, involving a short descent
and a climb of some 300'. The final descent takes us to
the coach at Portinscale. Superb panoramic views abound
on the walk from High Spy to Portinscale.
Distance: 8 miles
- Ascent: 2360'
- Leaders: Dennis Ashton, Peter Kenna and Ken Bryning
'C' Walk
A walk through the 'Jaws' of Borrowdale following the
river is really a highly prized experience for low level
walkers. Starting at Rosthwaite we include this element
in the first section of the walk. Having passed through
Grange (? coffee stop at Cafe) our course follows the
western shore of Derwentwater with spectacular views
across the lake to Skiddaw etc. We pass through wooded
areas and after reaching Portinscale we cross the curious
miniature suspension bridge to Keswick, A very beautiful
day out given reasonable weather, with no climbing of any
note.
Distance: 7 miles
Leaders: Derek Watchorn and Clive Chislett
