Range Walking Club
Sunday 21st October 1984-Lake District-Langdale
 
The next outing for the walking group is on Sunday, October 21st in the Langdale area of the Lake District. The coach will leave school at 8.00 a.m. and we hope to return by 7.00 p.m. The journey time is approximately 2 - 2½ hours. There will be a short convenience stop on the outward journey. The cost of the walks is £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you intend to join, and return it to the school by Thursday, 11th October. Details of the walks are given below.

'A' Walk - Pike O' Blisco and Crinkle Crags
The walk begins at New Dungeon Ghyll (295065) and continues up the valley to Wall End, and thence via Redacre Gill to the summit of Pike O' Blisco (2304'). A short descent to Red Tarn leads to Cold Pike (2259'), whence the ridge is followed north-west to Crinkle Crags (2816'), which are traversed to Three Tarns(248060). The descent is via Bowfell Band to Stool End and Langdale. "This ridge is a fell-walker's delight" (Wainwright).

Ascent: 3800ft.

'B' Walk - The Langdale Pikes
The walk also begins at New Dungeon Ghyll (295065) and ascends via Pike How into Harrison Combe and thence to Harrison Stickle (2403'). A detour can be made to Pavey Ark (2288'). From Harrison Stickle a pleasant short walk leads to Loft Crag (2270') and on to Pike O' Stickle (2323'). The descent is via Troughton Beck to Mickleden and Langdale.

Distance: 7½ miles
Ascent: 2600ft.

Boots, wind and waterproof clothing are essential for both these walks. Previous mountain walking experience is advisable.

'C' Walk - Loughrigg
The walk begins near Elterwater (330050). A footpath ascends over Red Bank and descends towards Grasmere lake. The walk then follows Loughrigg Terrace (with its views) to the caves, before ascending over the eastern shoulder of Loughrigg Fell and down to Skelwith Bridge. The circuit is completed along the River Brathay and past Elter Water, back to the start. Variations and detours are available. Boots or strong shoes are necessary. At the end of the walk the party will be picked up and taken into Ambleside to be collected later.
