Range Walking Club
Sunday 18th November 1984-Yorkshire-Wensleydale

The next walking group outing is on Sunday, 18th November to "James Herriot Country" (gritstone and limestone) - Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (O.S. map 98 1:50,000). The coach will leave school promptly at 8.00 a.m. and we expect to be back by 7.00 p.m. There will be a brief convenience Stop on the outward journey at Burton Services M6. Toilet facilities are available at all starting and finishing points. It will be wet and muddy underfoot so boots are essential. The cost of the walks is £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you intend to join, and return it to the school by Thursday, 8th November. Details of the walks are given below.

'A' Walk
Starting from the market town of Hawes on the Pennine Way, the party walks through the village of Gayle before ascending Yorburgh (1700 ft.) through fields and moorland. The path continues southwards until the Roman road is met and we follow this old route southwest as far as Bardale Head. A descent into Bardale following the beck brings us to Marsett from where we walk through meadows to Semerwater (of ballad fame), and then along the bank of the River Bain to Bainbridge.

Distance: 12 miles
Ascent: 1400 ft
Leaders: Peter Lucas and John McEvoy

'B' Walk
Leaving the delightful village of Bainbridge on the River Ure, we walk S.S.W. following the River Bain to Semerwater, the largest glacial lake in Yorkshire. We continue southwestwards to Marsett, then make the easy and only ascent of the walk over moorland to the Roman road, and finally a descent to our finish at Hawes, where it should be possible to obtain light refreshments.

Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 1000 ft
Leaders: Ian Gilmour and Ken Parks

'C' Walk
We will start from Aysgarth, famous for its spectacular series of big waterfalls. Following a visit to the Upper and Middle Falls we will continue on a circular walk which will include West Burton, one of the most picturesque villages in the county, returning in due course to Aysgarth.

Distance: 6 miles.
Leaders: Robert and Joyce Blackwell
