- Range Walking Club
- Friday 28th December
1984-Wirral-Thurstaston
-
- The December walk will take place on Friday 28th
December. This walk is by way of an experiment, and will
be centred on the Wirral, an area unlikely to be the
subject of a full day coach excursion. Transport will be
by private car, and directions to the start of the walk
are included in this note. The walks ( 8 miles and 6
miles) pass through delightful countryside with ( in good
weather! ) extensive views of the Dee Estuary, the Welsh
coast, and from Thurstaston Hill, views across Liverpool
and as far as Formby. It is proposed to keep the party as
one for the first 5 miles ( to encourage family
participation ) and the walk will pass along the beach,
through part of the Wirral Country Park, and Thurstaston
Hill. It is likely to be muddy in parts. The walk will
reach the Farmers Arms at lunchtime. This is a small
country pub, which only serves sandwiches/rolls. If
anyone wishes to bring their own food, rather than visit
the Farmers Arms there is a park with a picnic area
nearby.
We have endeavoured to keep the walk distance to suit the
daylight hours, and thus we will start at l0am. prompt at
Thurstaston Country Park Centre, and return to cars
before 4pm. In order to gauge interest, and to ensure
that nobody is left behind when we start, it would be
helpful if parties intending to go on the walk could ring
John Yabsley or Dave Luty indicating the number of people
in their party, and if they require transport, or indeed,
are willing to provide transport for those without means
of getting to the Wirral. Your co-operation in these
matters will ensure the smooth running of this
experimental excursion.
Assuming drivers know their way through the
"new" Mersey tunnel, proceed along the M53. to
the Arrowe Park exit. Take the A551 towards Arrowe Park
to the roundabout. Turn left, past Municipal Golf Course,
to next roundabout. Turn right, following sign to Irby
(85138) i.e. Thingwall road, and take junction 50 yards
on the right to Anchor Inn. Turn right onto Thurstaston
Road down to crossroads. Proceed across main road down
Station Road. Bear right near church and then follow road
and signs for Wirral Country Park. Entry to car park is
partly concealed on the left, just before going over bridge. Time from Formby to Thurstaston car park is
approximately 45 minutes. (40p each way tunnel fee
payable on Wirral side of tunnel).
