Sunday 12th February 1984-Lancashire-Hurst Green

 

The February walk which incorporates the annual Hot-Pot supper takes place on Sunday, 12th February. We hope that this event will receive the usual excellent support of members and their families, to match that of previous years. Based on beautiful stretches of the Rivers Ribble and Hodder in the vicinity of Stoneyhurst College, there is a choice of circular walks to suit all tastes. Binoculars could bring advantageous sightings for birdwatchers on the Hodder. Boots are required for all walks. Toilet facilities are available at Ribchester and Hurst Green. The coach will leave school promptly at 8.30 a.m. and we expect to return by 7.00 p.m. Supper has been arranged at Hurst Green and we have been offered two alternatives. The Whitehall Tea and Craft Centre would like an indication of individual choices in advance. Please mark on the booking form in the space provided, the number of each meal you wish to order. Prices are inclusive of Service and VAT. The cost of the walk is £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children. Please indicate which walk you intend to join.

'A' Walk
Begins at the ancient Roman fortress of Ribchester, going north via undulating farmland, moorland and woodland, ascending gradually onto Longridge Fell. Then we descend eastwards to the lovely River Hodder which we follow southwards until it joins the Ribble near Great Mitten. We follow the Ribble to finish the walk at Hurst Green. Many places of historic interest may be seen en route.

'B' Walk
From Hurst Green a short descent brings us to the bank of the Ribble which is followed eastwards and then north, joining the Hodder after about 2½ miles and following that for a further 2 miles. The walk takes us through delightfully varied farm, riverbank and woodland scenery, circumnavigating Stoneyhurst College, and finishing at Hurst Green.

'C' Walk
The Post Office at Hurst Green sells a wide variety of quality confectionery and other refreshment items. It should be open on our arrival. Back on the coach to Lower Hodder Bridge where the walk starts. It will be taken at a leisurely pace following the bank of the winding river towards Higher Hodder Bridge. The going is level apart from a short incline taken to avoid the eroded path. At Higher Hodder Bridge time is allowed for refreshments at a nearby Inn (inside or outside as you wish) after which we walk to Hurst Green via Stoneyhurst College, along its very impressive main drive.
