- Range Walking Club
- Sunday 26th September 1982-Lake
District-Langdale
-
- The next outing for the walking group will take place on
Sunday, 26 September, to the Langdale area of the Lake
District. It is essential that the coach leaves the
school at 8.00 a.m. promptly so please assemble for 7.45 a.m. We expect to return to Formby for 7.00
p.m. There will
be a short 'convenience' stop on the motorway on the
outward journey, Adequate protective clothing and boots
or strong shoes are necessary for all walks. The cost of
the walks is £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children.
Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you
intend to join and return it to the school office by
Thursday, 16 September. Details of the walks are given
below.
'A' Party
The walk begins at Dungeon Ghyll and all the Langdale
Pikes will be visited. Those wishing to ascend Pavey Ark
by Jack's Rake may do so.
Distance: 12 miles
- 3000ft of climbing.
Leader: Mr Orchard.
'B' Party
The coach will drop the walking party on the main
Langdale road from where the group will make its way
along via Langdale Beck to the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel
and then ascend to Stickle Tarn. This climb is very steep
and constitutes the hardest part of the walk. From the
tarn, after a well-deserved rest we climb on to Harrison
Stickle (2403 ft) and on to Pike of Stickle (2323 ft)
before following the route via Stake Pass and Black Crags
down by Rossett Gill and eventually ending up at the Old
Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. This route is stiff walking in
mountainous terrain and it is essential that those
wishing to join the 'B' party are wearing boots and are
sturdy walkers who have been on previous mountain walks
although the pace will be slow but steady.
Distance: approx 9 miles
Leaders: Mrs Orman and Miss Wright
'C' Party
- The walk will start from Elterwater Common, climbs gently
through woodland along a quiet road to Loughrigg Tarn.
From the Tarn we then follow a path climbing fairly
gently past Ivy Crag and down to Ambleside where there
will be opportunity for refreshments in the local tea
shops.
Distance: Approx 5 - 6 miles
Leaders: Mr and Mrs Craine
