Range Walking Club

Sunday 10th October 1982-North Lake District-Keswick

 

The next outing for the walking group will take place on Sunday, 10 October, to the Keswick area of the Lake District. It is essential that the coach leaves the school at 8.00 a.m. promptly, so please assemble for 7.45 a.m. We expect to return to Formby for 8.00 p.m. There will be a short 'convenience' stop on the motorway on the outward journey. Adequate protective clothing and strong footwear are necessary (boots for the 'A' and 'B' parties). The cost of the walks is £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children. Please indicate on the attached slip which walk you intend to join and return it to the school office by Thursday, 30 September. Details of the walks are given below.

'A' Party - The Coledale Horseshoe.
The walk begins at Braithwaite (grid ref: 232237) and ascends Grisdale Pike (2593 ft.). It continues along the ridge to Hopegill Head (2525 ft.), then down over Sand Hill (2431 ft.) to Coledale Hause (grid ref: 189212). The route then ascends the southern flank of Coledale to Eel Crag (called Crag Hill on the O.S. - 2753 ft.) and continues over Sail (2530 ft.) and Scar Crags (2205 ft.) to Causey Pike (2035 ft.), before descending to Stair. This is a strenuous but rewarding day along fine ridges.

'B' Party

The walk begins at Braithwaite and ascends Grisedale Pike (2593 ft). There are two fairly steep ascents on the way to the summit and these will be taken at a slow pace with pauses to take in the magnificent views - which we hope we will see! Weather and other circumstances permitting, the walk will then take in Hopegill Head (2525 ft.) and Ladyside Pike (2325 ft.) along fine ridges. In either case, after a good rest, the descent will be made to the Forestry Commission Visitor Centre on the Whinlatter Pass. Time will allow a visit. The final descent is through delightful woods via The hamlet of Thornthwaite.

Ascent: 2400 (or 2750) ft

'C' Party

This is a pleasant walk around the perimeter of Derwent Water. The walk starts at Kettlewell and follows the perimeter of the lake round to Keswick. There is very little real walking and as the path may be muddy in places, boots are advisable, This is an easy walk with no strenuous climbs.
