Sunday 8th February 1981-Trough of Bowland

 

The next excursion of the walking section will take place on Sunday, 8th February 1981, to Chipping/Dunsop Bridge area in The Lancashire Bowland district. Cost of the trip will be £2.00 for adults, £1.00 for children. The coach will leave the school car park at 8.45 a.m. and is expected to return at approximately 7.00 - 7.30 p.m.

When the groups finish their excursions, a meal can be provided at a Chipping restaurant. The menu is: meat and potato pie, peas, followed by a sweet and tea or coffee (if preferred, at extra cost). This high tea will be taken at 4.30 p.m. and will cost £1.80 per person. It is essential that exact numbers requiring a meal are confirmed a week before the walk. We should be grateful, therefore, if you would indicate your requirements on the attached slip and send it with the appropriate fee to reach Mr Farthing in room 4 during any morning tutor group period but certainly by 9.30 a.m. Monday, 26th January. Details of the three walks being offered are set out below. It would be helpful if you would indicate on the return slip the group which you intend to join.

'A' Walk

The walk is from Dunsop Bridge to Chipping. The route is not strenuous being a steady climb from Dunsop Bridge to Brown Berry Plain, level ground to Parlick Pike with grass, heather, peat underfoot. A short sharp descent to the road, Chipping and food. As usual boots and protective clothing should be worn as much of the walk covers exposed ground. Depending on the weather the view should be good. (Our visibility varied between 50 - 100 yds. when on the plain!).

'B' Walk

Out of Chipping to Windy Harbour then a fairly short sharp ascent from Fell Foot to the top of Parlick Pike, along Blindhurst Fell then dropping down to Bleasdale and so back to Chipping via Blindhurst, Weather permitting this should be a fairly easy walk, though possibly very wet underfoot. We rendezvous with parties 'A' and 'C' for high tea.

'C' Walk

This is an easy low level ramble through very pleasant countryside. It is a circular walk starting and finishing at Chipping with no climbs of any significance. Ancient and peaceful Chipping is one of the loveliest villages in Bowland and the walk gives fine views of the surrounding fells (this is of course weather permitting). Waterproof footwear is advisable as some of the terrain is subject to casual water therefore likely to prove muddy if conditions turn out to be wet.

Toilets are available at Chipping and Dunsop Bridge. A change of footwear is necessary for those people who wish to take a meal in the restaurant.
